UE Boom 2 Bluetooth Speaker Review

Ultimate Ears is one of popular brand when it comes to Bluetooth Speakers. With that being said we will be doing a review on UE Boom 2 Bluetooth Speaker.

This is a follow up version of UE Boom. And yes, there are some similarities and variations between them regarding the name, looks and features as well an improvement in inside features.

But the main objective of this review is to find out what exactly is UE Boom 2 Bluetooth Speaker.

However at the time of writing this post the Price in India is ₹ 9999.00.

But besides this you can also get Limited Lite Version of UE Boom 2 in low prices.

Design, Build & Features:

Going on the physical characteristics, this Bluetooth Speaker is 7 inches tall, 2 and 3/4 inches round, and weighs in at just 1.2 pounds or 548 g

Regarding the external appearances of the first series of a Boom speaker are quite similar. Indeed, the exterior has a sturdy nylon casing that adds roughness.

The first model was covered only by splash proof, however Boom 2 has a feature of the IPX7 ranking.

This ensures that up to a depth of 1 Metre or 3.28084 Feet of water will be completely immersed into water for 30 Min. And you don’t have to think about it, that’s all right. Yet one thing you remember is that this doesn’t float into the water.

That’s why you have to be a little vigilant if you get close to a deep pool or in the boat. In addition to this, a dirt proof is present even if includes dirt, so there would be no problem.

The bottom of the speaker has a short metal loop, which can be used anywhere to hook. A flap is also available protecting port 3.5 mm.

It also have an additional feature called Tap To Connect, it will play or pause just tap at the top of the boom and by double tapping it will next song. But it’s not going to work on the floor, you must take it with your other hand and tap away.

The app which is available for both Android and Apple devices, it does have a feature that doesn’t available in any other Bluetooth Speaker. The first choice is the Double Up, which gives you the same UE speaker, allowing you to use two speakers from the same source. There is also an equaliser if you don’t plan to use your own phone equaliser.

Finally, there’s also an alarm that’s play out from the music library. However, this alarm is only to set go off for everyday. There’s no way of selecting individual days or weekends.

Control Buttons:

The control are very easy you can handle by Phone or Physical Button. The physical button are really compact and they are really clicky.

On the top of the speaker there’s a button for Power On / Off and Bluetooth pairing.

There is a button for up and down volumes by moving at the front side of the Bluetooth speaker.

Also, you can switch tap control on or off etc. from inside the settings menu of your ULTIMATE EARS BOOM app.

Last but not least, UE Bluetooth Speaker has an interesting feature, which is that the battery level of a speaker is informed by pressing ‘+’ and ‘-‘ button simultaneously at once.

Battery Life:

According to the company declaration, it can last up to 15 hours with one complete single charge.

However, this may not be the case when it comes to actual use in life. It can last up to 10 hours with 50% of volume amount.

It’s a little less than the company says.

The life of battery is actually in most case it usually depends upon the usage, percentage of volume, temperatures and many more other factors.

But in most situations, in contrast to other small and large Bluetooth speakers it actually has decent life.

To load a Bluetooth speaker juice it use a micro-USB port to connect to the given wall charger. It would be much great if Type-C was given.

However, it can take 2.5 to 3 hours to get fully charge the battery from 0 to 100 percent.

Connectivity:

Those who knows the benefit of using NFC will really fall in love with it. And I think this feature is really underrated. That’s because with feature enable it has the ability to connect seamlessly.

What I mean is that just hold your device before the UE Boom 2, when shown just pair and connect.

But for this feature to use your phone must have a support of NFC. Besides Bluetooth Connection you will also get a 3.5mm jack.

However, there’s no 3.5mm cord is provided. Well, the range of Bluetooth in an open field/area is pretty strong and quite good enough.

In fact, it can go upto a maximum of 65 feet to 70 feet, before the sound get crackle.

In comparison with every other speaker, the connection is not very strong. I say, the link can only go through with a wall that is also need for securing the mobile devices.

Sound Performance:

A 360 degree sound speaker is not much more on the market. The UE Boom 2 or Megaboom are the 360 degree sound speakers.

The advantage is that you still get the same tone and loudness no matter from which side or face of the Bluetooth Speaker.

No, doubt about when it comes to Loudness, it really does and has really increase as seen in the UE’s website, and it definitely reflects that. 

The small or medium room size can be easily filled without sacrificing the quality. However the volume needs to be set to full to fill the large room.

But there is a slight low bump sound on the bass when you’re set to max volume. But by reducing the levels of bass a little it is much more enjoyed.

Coming to the middle range and the vocals are both good but not crisp and have no authority. Compare JBL Charge 2 and Bose Soundlink Mini 2 in particular. Despite the high volume production, even the peaks are blurred. But this depends on the music.

In fact at lower volume it really performance very well and there’s no pushing to it’s limit. However, it maintain signature sound and it is fine with a flat and more balanced sound.

The quality of sound is fine at low level volume and there’s no compromise on the quality even the bass, mids or highs. However, when pushing the volume at high the sound is use get crack, that’s the only problem.

To be honest, if you wanted to buy a Bluetooth Speaker to entertain you while having a party for filling room easily. I think this won’t work. However, if you are looking for a rugged bluetooth speaker for a trips and outdoor activities, this could definitely best in this aspects.

Should You Buy UE Boom 2 Bluetooth Speaker?

At this price Boom 2 isn’t that really worth. Unless if you’re option is for gifting then no doubt about it.

But if you are a person that who really a fan of a Boom series instead of Boom 2 you can consider for the 3 version by paying more around $ 20.

However, if you wanted other than Boom2 you can consider a JBL Flip 4 which is more better in sound and the overall performance. However, this Bluetooth Speaker doesn’t have that can float in the water. But this is acceptable, but if you a rugged a Bluetooth Speaker, like I mention you can go this one.
